    Task 5.2, 5.3 IEWB-RS Volume 2 Lab 16

    Hi All,

Can I use BSR instead Auto-RP?...Would will be the BSR valid solution or Am I missing something...?

    Thankx

As far as I can tell you can't use BSR here because of question 5.3.

BSR works with putting information in the PIM packets and Auto-RP uses 2 multicast groups (224.0.1.39 and 224.0.1.40). The task asks to NOT advertise RP information in VLAN63, but task 5.1 requires you to enable PIM on that interface, so with BSR that information would be propagated on the VLAN. With Auto-RP you can just set a 'ip multicast boundary' so that the 2 Auto-RP groups will never work on that interface.

    Hi Rick,

    Thank you for your response.

I am still a little bit confuse here...

If I use (config-if)#ip pim bsr-routers for the task 5.3...It doesn't block Auto-RP groups (224.0.1.39&40), but the BSR msg. will not be propagate out to device in Vlan 63.

Task 5.3 Asking for: "...your RP information is not advertised out to device in VLAN 63."

My RPs informations are BSR msg. not the Auto-RP..?!

    Thanks,

    Regards

    F.

I guess you are right about that, I totally forgot about the 'ip pim bsr-border' command, that does the same thing as the 'ip multicast boundary' command for Auto-RP. In that case I have to say that BSR is definitely an option for this question since it's not prohibited.
