    Lost and confused

    Hello all,

At the risk of looking stupid I have to ask what am I suppose to do as a student when nothing seems to make sense.  I have been reading about how great this program is since I signed up in June.  I've read post after post regarding how this the program to get if you want to be a CCIE.  But honestly what should I do as a student if I'm just not getting it.  I've watched the Video on Demands.  I have my CCNP (which I know is light years away from the IE). So I'm not altogether clueless (and no I didn't use braindumps).

I struggle with what seems to be errors in the labs, to include the mock labs, and yes I know that there are troubleshooting steps in the labs, but that doesn't address solutions to steps that aren't in the labs, or solutions that don't seem to address all the task in a particular section (I am making reference to the solution documents you can download after a mock lab).  Even trying to take as long as necessary to forensically go through a mock lab on my own equipment I am still having issues.

So what am I suppose to do? At the moment I feel like I've wasted my money and my time.

Please don't read this as an attack, its not.  It's obvious that you guys are brilliant, but I'm still lost and confused.

    Warmest Regards,

    Terry Vinson

    Re: Lost and confused

    Hi Terry,

I was in that same spot doing the cd's and then struggling on the labs in workbook 2.  I finally went back and started the labs in workbook 1.  I don't configure all of the labs in workbook 1 but I do go through each exercise and then configure the challenging ones on my home rack.  It's filled in a lot of the gaps.

    Hang in there.

    Re: Lost and confused

Try breaking the technologies their simplest form start with only a few routers and only one technology at a time.  Once you have confidence you know how the technologies work it should be much easier to integrate them.  When going through the workbook I found I could easily do 80% of the lab, but if I got stuck I was just stuck because I did not really understand the basics.  This is especially true for a topic like multicast where your configuration for the section might match the SG work for word, but due to differences in the IGP routing yours does not work.  Upon realizing this I completely abandoned the full scale labs and  just went through the technologies one by one.  Even after doing this and finishing the workbooks 2 & 3 I realize there are still topics which I need to go back through such as CBAC, MQC, and L2 QOS.  The V5 workbooks are amazing for this, but don't be afraid to just play around create your own labs these really make you think about what is possible.  Whether I become a CCIE or not I could never see any time spent learning as wasted.  (unless I am learning Lock & Key Security)

    RE: Lost and confused

Well, the forensic part is certainly a good one to start.  The question becomes whether you are seeing all the piecs or not.  There are many solutions that fit some tasks.  Whether you choose  a different one than the lab soltions doesn't necessarily matter.  but you need to be able to evaluate whether your solution meets the requirements, and doesn't break any other requirements along the way!

If you have specifics, feel free to unicast me and I'll try to go over them with you!
